The founding of Irish
Military Online came about after the merger of the two leading internet
sites dedicated to the Irish Defence Forces, Shane Barry's 'Boomer'
website and "Kermits" Naval Service site. Eamonn Ó hAodha
soon joined the duo to begin creation of the new site in mid 2002. In
October of the same year, the new Irish Military Online website went
live along with the new discussion board. Having already a good userbase
due to the solid foundation created by its two predacessors, the site
flourished.
It soon became clear that the discussion board was the backbone of the
site when membership trippled in the first three months. What started
out as an alternative to the lacklustre official Irish Military website,
soon grew to become the place where soldiers come first to hear news
and gather information. Irish Military Online offered members of the
PDF and more popularly the Reserve Defence Forces a place to discuss
the latest goings-on in the military. In January 2004 the site passed
a landmark 500 members and 25,000 posts which is sure to be doubled
even quicker. The site now proudly boasts the accurate title of 'Irelands
Largest Military Community'.
Due to the sheer growth of the website and discussion boards, more volunteers
were required to help, thus the addition of 'yellowjacket', 'Goldie
Fish', 'FMolloy' and 'Joshua' to the team. It is these four men that
endure the difficult task of keeping the boards in order.
